Redhead Design Studio

10 is a Good Age

So, Redhead is turning 10 this month. That's led me to take stock in this company and the way we do things. Being a business owner, I find myself feeling both humble and proud, at turns. Yes, there are plenty of businesses bigger than ours. Yes, there are lots of people out there making more money than us. Yes, there are agencies and studios with more flashy client rosters.

But our little company does things differently, and I'm proud of that. We don't follow the book. The book was written by people who work 80- hour weeks and relegate parenting to a chore to fit in between meetings. The book was written by people who think that money is the path to happiness, and that their employees are beholden to the work. The book was written by people who think that any business is good business, even if it means working on projects that go against your better judgement. We don't follow that book. Call me Pollyanna, but I'm happy to be that way.

We work with people we like. We understand that family always comes first. We know that no job is worth unhappiness, and that your kid's soccer game is more important than a logo. Our company has grown along with our families—we have five kids under eight between the two of us. Our company has been able to offer our employees health benefits while others are taking those away. Our company has experienced steady, measured growth in a climate of budget-cuts and depressed attitudes.

In my book, we are a great success story. I can't wait to take stock again in 2020.
