Happy Birthday to Me

February is a good month. Not just because I get my birthday (which, as I get older, may not be the greatest thing). But Redhead gets older, too. And in the world of small business, this is a great thing. This year, Redhead turns nine.

Let me share some statistics about small businesses and their lack of ability to actually stay in business. Most new businesses fail. Only two-thirds survives their first two years—and only one third survive their first seven years. So that means only 1 in 3 small businesses ever get to see their eighth, ninth year, and beyond.

So that fact that we got here? Nice. We're pretty happy.

Redhead started in a spare room in my home, and the first paid project was a 1/4 page trade pub ad for an automatic horse feeding system. Redhead moved from my house to a "real" office four years after that. Amy joined me as fifty percent owner two and a half years ago, and since then we've expanded our scope and client base considerably. We have clients that stretch as far and Oregon and New York. These days, we're crafting websites, annual reports, direct mail, websites, magazines, and websites.

I feel very lucky to do what I do. And even luckier that we seem to have staying power. Here we come, year ten.
